News from the Practice Manager

By Sheila Martin, Summer 2013
The Year in Brief This year we celebrated 20 years of Day Surgery! Opening one of the first day-only eye theatres in Sydney, our first operating list had four cataract patients in 1993. Fast forward to May 2013 and MetWest has seen 20,000 patient admissions. Another big achievement for MetWest Eye Centre was winning the Professional Medical Services Category of the Local Business Awards. A big thank you to all our loyal patients and friends of the centre who voted for us in this prestigious event. Medical Director, Dr Robyn Armstrong and the “team” attended the ceremony at the Blacktown Workers Club to receive the award which is now proudly on display! Our Doctors and Staff The centre has seen the departure of Dr David McKay who has literally sailed away on a voyage of discovery for the last 6 months! We hope to see him on his safe return. We are also saying goodbye to Dr Maciek Kuzniarz, who has decided to relocate his family to Canberra to set up practice there. Maciek has been with the centre for the last five years and we wish him all the very best. Dr James Jabbour joined us mid-year. James has recently returned from a fellowship in the UK and will be taking over the care of Maciek’s patients. The latter part of this year has seen big changes in our reception staff with long-serving receptionists Ayse and Gilliane all moving on to bigger and better things. We thank you for your patience whilst a new “team” is being trained as there is a lot to learn! Education and Events at MetWest Other highlights of the year included celebrations of World Glaucoma Week, Macular Degeneration Week, World Sight Day and Australian Private Hospitals Week. MetWest also played host to our first Australian Day Surgery Nurses Association Education Seminar where Dr Minh Tran, anaesthetist, gave a history of anaesthetics in general and specifically eye anaesthetics as used in today’s modern eye surgery setting. Similarly Robyn Armstrong outlined the advancements in cataract surgery and the use of intraocular lens implants. Our annual optometrist evening was held in May where two of our most experienced doctors presented: Facing the Facts on Lid Procedures (Dr Tony Maloof) and Eye Surgery in Patients with Wet AMD (Dr Mark Gorbatov). Hopefully everyone took away a pearl of wisdom! Two patient seminars were held in April and October on Macular Degeneration and its current treatments. John Stokes of Inservio ran a very interactive session, well received by our AMD patients. This year saw all of the MetWest doctors attending major conferences with their international colleagues, keeping up with the latest advancements - Dr Armstrong attended the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons conference in Amsterdam, Dr Kaines flew to Toronto for the American Society of Retinal Specialists meeting, Dr Kuzniarz went to the American Academy of Ophthalmologists congress, whilst Drs Benjamin, Thiagalingam, Jabbour, Gorbatov, Maloof, Rowe and Ong, as well as Orthoptist Jenny, all attended the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists meeting in Hobart. The annual MetWest Staff Training Day was held in September - everyone had a refresher on their Fire and Emergency skills, CPR and manual handling, ensuring MetWest continues to provide a safe environment for patients.
