How’s your macula?

The key message of this year’s macula degeneration awareness week is “Early detection can literally save your sight. Contact your optometrist or eye specialist immediately if you have any sudden changes in your vision.” – Julie Heraghty, the CEO of the MD Foundation Australia.

Macular Degeneration affects one in seven over the age of 50, with the prevalence increasing with age.  Tips for preventing vision loss include:

  • eating a diet rich in fish and coloured vegetables
  • stopping smoking
  • never ignoring changes in vision

Annual Optometrist Education Evening

Local Optometrist Vira Bodnaruk with Dr Robyn Armstrong

Last week, Tuesday 7th May, was the annual MetWest Eye Centre Eye Update for Optometrists.

Dr Maloof and Dr Gorbatov took us from the front to the back of the eye, with Dr Maloof presenting on oculo-plastics – problems with the skin around the eye, and Dr Gorbatov speaking on Macular Degeneration and the changing treatments for patients with multiple eye problems.

The local Optometrists all found the evening informative – with Ophthalmologists and Optometrists alike enjoying the opportunity to speak with their colleagues and give feedback on the services provided locally.  Complete this form if you would like to come to future Eye Updates.
