The Bionic Eye – is this the future?

Researchers in Melbourne have implanted a “pre-bionic” eye allowing a woman with profound vision loss to see!

Ms Ashworth had the eye implanted earlier this year, and following several months recovery from the procedure the eye was turned on – allowing Ms Ashworth to see “a little flash of light”.

This marks an exciting step for people with currently incurable vision loss.

MetWest’s 2012 community education program is well underway!

Last week Jenny, one of MetWest’s Orthoptists, continued the program, visiting the Constitution Hill Retirement Village and leading a seminar on Macular Degeneration for interested residents. The interactive seminars run for approximately an hour, informing patients about eye conditions and their treatment, early detection and prevention techniques.

Eye Update 2012 – “Interactive and Interesting”


A full-house of Optometrists attended the Eye Update at MetWest Eye Centre on Tuesday 7 August. ¬†Attendees heard the latest on “Common Lid Conditions” from Dr Maciek Kuzniarz, and “What to Expect in Glaucoma Emergencies” from Dr Alessandra Martins (pictured). This was followed by a workshop on interpreting RNFL scans on the Cirrus OCT.

All attending found the evening very informative and valuable to their clinical practice, with comments such as “interactive and interesting”, “excellent”, “very informative” “very relevant”, “fantastic video!” and more.
